Success and Failure - The Dance of Hiring

The success and failure of individuals you select to work for you is a very serious task. If you screw this one, it will cost you dearly. The people you select can make you successful or a complete failure.

Here you are looking at candidates who are about to become part of your team. You will invest time, money, energy, knowledge, and more to develop a person who in most cases you know very little about.

All things being equal, how do you choose? I wrote about the interview, I wrote about the selection process, I wrote about the identification process. This article is about a very common, human emotion: avoiding failure.

Over time you develop your own set of “avoiding failure” rules on hiring or selecting individuals. Examples are:

I’ll never hire another young woman. They get married and leave.

Or

I’ll never hire child bearing age women. They have children and leave.

Or

Women with children always have issues and have to take a lot of time off.

Or

This person is overqualified for the job, they will leave.

Or

That person stayed too long at one job.

Or

This person never finished college.

You see where I’m going with this. What is happening here is a set of criteria for the success or failure of selecting individuals develops over time. After every failure, a cause is established which later becomes another measure by which not to select someone.

Naturally, it is not good to select someone bound for failure. Naturally you want to avoid past mistakes. You should review your selection criteria periodically and develop factors which are success oriented. Those are associated with the job activity and interpersonal skills.

Because…You don’t really know, maybe the young woman has a nanny who will take care of the children at home? Maybe the person who didn’t finish college is self educated and more knowledgeable than most people in the organization?

Don’t get locked into one way of thinking.
