Evaluation of Employees: Why is Bob better than Jonathan

Fair evaluation of employees has to be factual and not based on opinion.

Avoid communication problems and don't state that Bob is a good employee without facts supporting the statement.

We tend to judge a lot, and most of us a pretty opinionated. However, when it comes to managing and the work place, particularly when an employee is being judged, it behooves us to back statements like Bob is good with facts. If Bob is good but no one can prove it, then, this statement is just an opinion.

How can you evaluate an employee and be factual? First, set standards. Is the employee above or below the standard? Have you set the standard? Where's the proof? Are they documented? Have you measured the employee against the standards?

Remember, when one person says a statement like "Bob is good" without meaningful support; while he treats it as a statement of fact, the receiver treats it as an opinion.
