communication Guidelines in Business

Communication guidelines in business consist of three channels for both oral and written communication. The three are general to specific, simple to complex, and known to unknown.

I. General to Specific - Organize the information like a funnel. Just like the post office reasing an address. You go from country,to city, to street, to a house number, to a suite.

II. Simple to Complex - Break complex ideas into its smaller component parts. This helps in explanation and description. Like learning a foreign language or computer programming. Start simple and grow.

III. Known to Unknown - Understanding and retention will be maximized if the new material is built on material already known. If you explain the game of rugby to Americans, start with the familiar football and note the exceptions and similarities.

The section of Communication in business is paramount, therefore I shall spend quite a bit on communication in the business environment.

In the next page, see the steps in communication and how fragile communication can be.
